本書（全新版）根據(jù)成人高等教育的最新教學大綱與考綱修訂而成。全書選用了24篇各種不同題材和文體的原版短文作為12個單元中的 text A與B。text A均配有難句注釋、日常對話、詞語學習、語法知識以及多種形式的綜合練習（包括問題簡答、完形填空、句子變換、短語連接、漢英翻譯、閱讀理解和基礎寫作等等）。text B內容與text A基本呼應，其后一般只設難句注釋與問題簡答，以培養(yǎng)學生的自學能力和綜合運用英語的能力，亦可供教學選用。 另外，編者還設計了兩套綜合復習試題，可供教師考查和學生自測之用。書末另附總詞匯表，以便于讀者參閱。
